Inspired by a traditional “silla de palo”, a basic style of chair found across Mexico, Oscar Hagerman designed Silla Arrullo. In the 1960s he began to work with the “Don Emiliano” carpenter’s collective in Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl on the outskirts of the Mexican Capital. The project involved every stage in the process, from the design, purchase, and selection of the materials to the organization of the manufacturing and marketing of the final product. The overriding idea was for the designs to be easily put together, so that the craftsmen could produce logical and easy-to-produce designs that made the most out of the materials. These simple pieces of furniture were made to compete in the marketplace. Silla Arrullo, better known as Silla Hagerman, was based on a popular design to be naturally reincorporated into the same world from which it came.
